Worth More Wild!

What's New

Colorado’s most pristine and valuable landscapes are under attack from out-of-control oil and gas drilling.

That’s why Environment Colorado is calling on our representatives in Congress to support wilderness protection for our most beautiful—and most endangered—wild lands.

Background

Coloradans are blessed to have such stunning wild landscapes in our state. Our wild lands offer amazing opportunities for hiking, biking and fishing, but they also benefit us in other ways:

•    The outdoor recreation and tourism industries contribute more than $10 billion dollars each year to Colorado’s economy.

•     Our wild lands are the headwaters of the West, providing fresh drinking water worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Unfortunately, some of Colorado’s iconic landscapes—places like Roan Plateau, known for its big game hunting, or Dolores River Canyon, a popular rafting destination when the spring waters run—are threatened by new drilling and mining operations.

Companies such as Chevron, Encana and ExxonMobil are staking their claims on Colorado’s wild lands with ferocious speed. In 2007, Colorado issued a record-breaking 6,400 new drilling permits.

That’s why Environment Colorado is building support for wilderness protection to safeguard 1.6 million acres of our most valuable wild lands from mining, drilling and logging.
