A mountaineer renowned for amputating his own arm after it was pinned by a half-ton boulder is joining outdoors enthusiasts calling for more land to be protected. Aron Ralston is with the Colorado Wilderness Network on Tuesday to call for more lands to be federally designated as wilderness areas. The areas are in the San Juan Mountains, the White River National Forest region and a northwest Colorado parcel that includes Browns Canyon.

A man at the center of natural resource debates in Colorado may soon get the chance to help lead such debates at the national level. President Obama has decided to nominate Harris Sherman, executive director of Colorado’s Department of Natural Resources, to serve as the U.S. Department of Agriculture undersecretary for natural resources and environment. He would oversee the Forest Service and Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Members of Colorado's congressional delegation are gearing up to seek protection for thousands of acres of pristine wilderness, part of 1.9 million acres in the state that environmental groups are trying to place under the strictest federal protection. A suite of parcels proposed by environmentalists for protection would expand Colorado's current wilderness (3.7 million acres, 3 percent of the state) by 50 percent. The designation bars motorized vehicles and other mechanized activity except in emergencies.

Oil and gas industry officials say that proposed new federal legislation, aimed at requiring gas drilling companies to reveal the chemicals used in what is known as “frac'ing” or hydraulic fracturing, is not needed because there already are state regulations that cover the matter. But opponents say the state's rules are inadequate, and are supporting the legislation, recently introduced by U.S. Representatives Diana DeGette, Jared Polis, both Colorado Democrats, and two eastern legislators.

Uranium is showing no sign of cooling down in Southwest Colorado. A second boom is now in full swing in the region, courtesy of high prices for the radioactive ore along with a Department of Energy decision last summer that opens 27,000 acres on the Western Slope to uranium mining. On Feb. 21, the House Agriculture, Livestock and Natural Resources Committee overwhelmingly passed a bill to prevent unsafe uranium mining.

He noted published reports that uranium claims jumped from 120 in 2003 to more than 2,000 four years later and that the Dolores River Canyon already is being impacted by uranium mining.” “We want to ensure that we do it right,” Garrington said. “We have a lot of other uses on private and public lands that we need to balance uranium mining with. We have a $10 billion outdoor recreation economy here in Colorado and that’s something that’s worth protecting.”
