What the frack?

As they say on Battlestar Galactica, “What the frack?”

The gas industry must be living in outer space claiming that fluids laced with cancer-causing chemicals used in “fracing” are safe  (Re: “Hydraulic fracturing is safe, key to energy goals,” Denver Post, 12/1/08).

They claim that no fracing has contaminated drinking water. Trouble is, the EPA states that 10 out of 11 coalbed methane basins where fracing occurs are sources of drinking water. And if it’s so safe, why did gas industry lobby to exempt fracing from the “Safe Drinking Water Act?”

Industry is shamelessly arguing that burning gas produces less global warming pollution than coal. That’s true, but fracing and drilling gas releases methane, which is a 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide pollution.

That’s just fracked-up.

We should be supporting real clean energy solutions by passing a national renewable energy standard and making clean energy investment a cornerstone to the upcoming economic stimulus package.
