Congress returns from recess this week, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said that they will vote on new energy legislation. While we don't have specifics of the bill yet (tune in shortly for an update), we know that the bill should have.
The current debate over gas prices and our energy crunch are missing the point. We cannot drill our way to cheap gas, but we can ease the pain by getting into cars that go farther on a gallon of gas. So, Congress should make sure to increase mileage per gallon standards on cars and trucks.
This debate is really about America's energy future. What we know is that a truly energy independent future will come from tapping into our abundant renewable resources like wind and solar and by using these to power our cars and trucks. So, Congress should extend the tax incentives for renewable resources to kick start these technologies.
This is going to be a fight. Congressional Republicans are trying to answer Senator McCain's "Drill Baby Drill" chant by calling for opening America's Coast, the Arctic, and digging in to Colorado shale. They are leading us into more dependence on oil and sure environmental disaster.
I urge you to call your Representative and let them know that drilling is not the answer.
During the debate this week I'll try and post some updates about where we are in this fight.
