Keep Colorado beautiful and support strong protections from uranium mining pollution

Hang on to your cowboy hats: the mining boom is back!

Colorado is on the front end of a new uranium boom. Uranium claims on public lands alone jumped from just over 100 claims in 2003 to more than 10,000 claims in 2007. Some homeowners just west of Pueblo and some ranchers north of Fort Collins are finding out that mining companies are prospecting in their back yard. Unfortunately, uranium mining can often leave behind a radioactive legacy, ruining mountain landscapes, poisoning waterways and harming local communities.

Colorado’s laws are out-of-date and unprepared to deal with new mining techniques. What’s more, some mining companies have argued uranium mining is exempt from environmental and public health protections.

Please take a moment to email your senator to support House Bill 1161, the Land & Water Stewardship Bill, and make sure we protect communities and keep Colorado beautiful.
